C&C Generals was first unveiled back at E3 and EA hasnt said many new things about it at the ECTS. I like C&C games though, so Ill keep going.
Generals is the first game of the series to have the toolbar at the bottom of the screen rather than at the right hand side as was the tradition up until now. The change could be because of the fact that this is the first C&C title without the Westwood name on it. However, the importance of where they stick it wont matter so long as the game lives up to expectations. Interestingly enough, in Generals there are 3 different sides and with 27 different missions, the game looks very interesting. This way the math works out rather nicely. With 9 different player types in all each will have at least one mission that will test a certain generals capabilities. If you choose the Americans youll be blowing up your enemies with B52s, Abrams Tanks, Comanche gunships, F22 fighters, and aerial superiority, among other things. The US tries not to put their people in too much danger, hence the high reliance on planes and armour. The aurora fighters are rather useful in large groups but they are comparatively expensive so this is not always feasible.
Next we have the Chinese (in-house joke noted) with flame tanks, hacker units (very cool: these dudes can hack enemy computers!) and their ability to spot hidden units. These former-communists have a lot of people to spare so theyll gladly send great flocks of soldiers to overwhelm their enemies Finally theres the GLA, a terrorist crowd (/disgruntled generation X-ers) who have the ability to cause low cost havoc through the use of dirty low-tech weapons and units like truck/buggy mounted guns and rockets, RPG carrying soldiers, and angry mobs. They can even blow up dams to wash away their enemies in a torrent of water that will leave only a large lake behind. Just because their weapons are homemade, doesnt mean they arent deadly.
The fact that there are 3 different sides means that youll sometimes be fighting more than just one advisory at a time. EA are still deciding on the best way for unit building to be handled. If units can only be built from the toolbar, a space for the unit will have to be reserved. If units can only be built through clicking on the appropriate building then there will be a lot of scrolling involved, and maybe even a lawsuit for a strained wrist if things get out of hand!
EA asked Korean warcraft players for advice on the interface and discussions are on going. Its nice to see companies asking for feedback from the players themselves. I think it shows how they want to make better games. Another issue is that of online public beta testing. Renegades went through this process and it is becoming more common. For the moment we can only speculate. Generals uses the SAGE graphics engine thus the game is fully 3D, allowing for full rotation and different levels of zoom, more interaction and greater use of the environment as a weapon. This is something that was unheard of in earlier C&C games however its a commonplace feature nowadays. A rotating camera is a big step for a C&C game. All the small things have the same attention paid to them, as is the case with the other games in the series. Chopper pilots become infantry units if they get shot down, flame tanks can light up buildings and run away, leaving the flames to do the damage and the new engine allows for new tactics and strategies.
Whats more, the Chinese army usually sends large numbers of soldiers to do its work. They can spare the manpower. They are good at overrunning entrenchments but hopeless against vehicles. The GLAs quad launcher packs a real punch and despite its low armour it is fast enough to dodge the enemy. The Americans use good old-fashioned tanks and flyers that get the job done old school stylee.
Each side has 3 different types of General to choose from, each with his own special power. If you play as the US Tank General, all of your tanks begin as veterans. This makes them harder to kill. The Special Operations General has the ability to paradrop Rangers onto the battlefield. Cool huh? Theyre like the jumpjet infantry from tiberian sun but they cant really fly at all. Still, theyll come in all guns blazing as theyre deployed. The final US general is the Air Force specialist who has access to a special fighter-bomber, the aurora I mentioned above.
The Chinese Red Army general is all heavy firepower and artillery, beating his opponents up close and at long range, somewhat like the nod forces from Tiberian Sun. The players who prefer defensive oriented fighting can choose the Super Weapons general. Hes much more difficult to get close to, what with all those nasty traps and Nukes. Finally, the Secret Police general can attack your enemies infrastructure through computer hacking. This is why theyre cool. Nothing says egg on your face like when your power shuts down and an army of Chinese soldiers is swarming all over your base.
The GLA has 3 distinct generals. Their first is the terrorist cell general. This dude is sneaky as hell. Youll be sitting there twiddling your thumbs when BAM! Your base becomes a crater. If you arent the kind who likes to have to sneak around all the time then you can try the BioWar general. This general keeps a bag of anthrax handy, in case he cant burn that blockade down. Disease is his bedfellow and hes not afraid to use bio weapons to achieve his goals. But if youre like me youll just pick the Warlord general. This is the type of generals who runs at the enemy with units that heal themselves. Invariably, causalities will be high. Enemy causalities that is
Each side has its own super weapon: the US has a Daisy Cutter Bomb, the Chinese have the Nuclear Missile, and the GLA have a nasty mess maker called the Scud Storm.
Generals has no cutscenes but its not all bad. The in-game matrix moments make up for it and the action isnt broken up as much any more. Its like the movies that you might see between the missions in cinematic form have been replaced by in-game sequences that the engine renders without breaking up the action. If a quad buggy is heading for the dam to blow it up, then the engine will make the camera follow it to illustrate its intent. The modding community will be glad to know that the level editor is to be released before the actual game and the game itself is mod friendly, featuring open source .ini files that will make the game easier to customise. From what weve seen at E3 and from press releases, Generals looks set to be the best C&C game so far. Santa will be around to deliver it when it comes out, so this game also looks like a good stocking filler (yay!). Heres to blowing things up!
